Do Cats Need Superfoods?

Eating right makes us feel good. Even though it’s not always easy to stick to a perfect diet, most of us still agree that nutritious foods can give us energy, keep us looking and feeling good, and help us stay at a healthy weight. Cats need superfoods in order for their diet to be perfectly balanced.

You may also be familiar with “superfoods”, those nutritionally dense ingredients that can support your health and give a little added pep in your step. Items like goji berries, chia seeds and cranberries are all popular superfood ingredients.

But did you know that cats can benefit from the nutritional punch offered up by certain superfoods as well? That’s right, cats love superfoods too, and fortunately there are many ways to ensure our lovable furry family members get the diet they need to help them stay healthy and happy over the course of their life.

The best part? Cat-approved superfoods are not exotic ingredients only carried in specialty stores. Most feline superfoods are widely available in your neighborhood supermarket.

Which superfoods do cats need?

1. Whole, nest-laid eggs

Eggs are a complete protein, containing all the essential amino acids cats need. Eggs are also high in thiamine, natural fats, lysine, Vitamins A, B12, D, E, K, and other essentials. Eggs really are a little miracle ingredient that contain many of the building blocks needed to help sustain a healthy life.

Just make sure to cook your eggs first before they reach your cat’s dinner plate. Raw eggs may harbor bacteria that can cause illness (FDA.gov). Also, while eggs are beneficial in so many ways, they are a rich treat that is high in fat. When it comes to eggs, too much of a good thing can be, well, too much. Feed your kitty eggs in moderation to ensure they continue to reap only the benefits of this powerful superfood.

2. Field peas

Peas are a popular superfood for cats because they are a grain-free option that is still a good source of carbohydrates and fiber. Peas are also high in protein and contain many of the essential amino acids required by cats and dogs.  Other nutrient-rich pulses, like chickpeas and lentils, are great grain-free superfood options for cats.

3. Pumpkin

Pure pumpkin can help soothe your cat’s tummy troubles. Rich in beta-carotene and prebiotic fiber, pumpkin supports healthy digestion. Even pumpkin juice is beneficial. Just remember that not all canned pumpkin is created equal. Look for brands where pure pumpkin is the only ingredient. Added sugar or flavorings are not healthy, and not necessary, for your kitty.

4. Blueberries

Berries often sit at the top of any superfood list. They’re sweet and yummy and pack a punch of antioxidants to support immune system health. Blueberries are a great source of fiber that can support healthy gut bacteria and good digestion. Strawberries are also a healthy and safe berry option and can add even more variety to the old routine.

5. Flaxseed

Flaxseed provides a host of nutritional benefits for feline health. First and foremost, flaxseeds are packed full of vitamins and minerals, and a source of dietary fiber and antioxidants. Flaxseed can also boost the immune system and aid in digestive health.

6. Pomegranate

This divine fruit is nutrient dense and rich in antioxidants. Pomegranates are a good source of dietary fiber, folate, Vitamin C and Vitamin K. But beware that pomegranate seeds may pose a choking hazard. Only feed pomegranate in moderation and supervise your kitty as they devour this sweet superfood treat.

7. Cranberries

Cranberries are bursting with antioxidants and antibacterial properties that can support urinary tract health.1 It is the proanthocyanidins in the cranberry which can support urinary health through the prevention of certain bacterial growth, however, if your cat is experiencing chronic UTI's or other urinary issues please seek veterinary care.
